Brief Biography
Shermans Father died when he was just nine years old, He was raised by Senator Thomas Ewing, which probably helped him get into West Point. He graduated as fith in his class, and served in the Mexican war. He resigned in 1853. In civilian life he wasn't very succsesfull, he was a banker and a lawyer before the war. During the war he always impressed his superiors, and was eventually promoted to Major General.
He always refused to become involved in politics, and after the war stayed in the military. He was promoted to full General, and later replaced Grant as the General in Chief. He retired in February 8, 1884, and died in his home in New York on February 14, 1891.
